Bridges

The Council are responsible for the maintenance of road bridges, footbridges, subways and retaining walls supporting roads.

How many bridges are there?

We hold records of about 320 structures in the area, including bridges, culverts and retaining walls. We are directly responsible for the structural maintenance of about 80 major highway bridges, having an asset value of approximatley £91M.

How often are bridges inspected?

Bridges are inspected every 2 years with a more detailed inspection done every 6 years. The inspections are used to generate condition indicators and maintenance programmes.

Who looks after Motorway and Railway bridges?

Bridges and structures over or under the M53 Motorway in Wirral are owned by the Highways Agency and are maintained by A-one+, Sankey House, 130 Birchwood Boulevard, Birchwood, Warrington, Cheshire WA3 7QH Tel: 01925 859250

Railway bridges over the road in Wirral are owned by Network Rail, but the Council are responsible for erecting and maintaining the headroom signs on these bridges. To report damage to a railway bridge caused by a high vehicle call the Network Rail helpline 08457 11 41 41.
