Welcome To Wirral
Road signs
Road signs play a vital role in assisting drivers and pedestrians on the roads and highways. They also help keep all road users safe.
Signs fall into certain groups:-
Regulatory signs - signs with red circles
Warning signs - mostly triangular
Direction signs - mostly rectangular. Destination and map type
Information signs - mostly rectangular
We are responsible for:
Illuminated bollards
Illuminated traffic signs
Non-illuminated traffic signs
Street name plates
Can I report a damaged road sign?
You can telephone Wirral’s call-centre on 606 2004. In either case it will help us if you provide an accurate description of what the problem is and an exact location. As with road repairs, we will:
Respond to an emergency or dangerous defect within two hours of it being reported.
Respond to other defects within five working days of it being reported.
Give you a timescale within which the repair work will be carried out.
How soon will a faulty road sign be fixed?
This depends on the nature of the fault. Following an inspection by Council engineers any road sign defects are classed as either a ‘priority’ job or as a ‘serviceability’ job. This classification depends on a range of factors.
The priority jobs need to be done first for safety reasons and after an initial inspection they will be repaired within 28 days.
The serviceability jobs are ones that don’t present any immediate risk to public safety. They are still recommended for repair work, but the timescale within which they are carried out depends on the availability of funding. A list of all outstanding serviceability jobs is drawn up and reviewed on a monthly basis. We attempt to clear as much of this work as possible, but due to it not being urgent and budget dependent we are limited.
* In some instances there might be a delay if the illuminated sign requires a new supply of electricity from Scottish Power.
Can you remove a road sign?
There are certain criteria with the placing of signs. However, if you are concerned over the location of a sign for access reasons we will investigate the matter.
Can we get a ‘No ball games’ sign in our road?
You can have one for £30 and we will put it up. However, it does not have any legal standing and you would need the agreement of other local residents.
The street name plate has disappeared – can you replace it?
If there are two name plates and one is still in place this meets national guidelines.
On a regular basis we will review requests for replacement name plates. If there is funding available they will be replaced.
To report damaged or missing road markings or signs, or to request additional road markings, or traffic signs, either call StreetScene on 606 2004, email streetscene@wirral.gov.uk or click on the "Request Service" button.
