Welcome To Wirral

Pavement crossings

Wirral Council is committed to ensuring that roads and pavements are safe and well maintained. Many residents are surprised to learn that it is in fact against the law to allow cars to regularly drive over the pavement to gain access their property, unless a Council approved car crossing is in place across the pavement. As this could cause damage to the pavement surface or to gas or water supplies running underneath the pavement.

How Can I Apply For A Dropped Kerb / Vehicle Crossing

You can request a vehicle crossing by either calling our StreetScene team on 606 2004, emailing streetscene@wirral.gov.uk

What Happens Next

Once we receive your request for a Vehicle Crossing an inspector will visit the site. A check list will then be completed which includes the measurement of the crossing, noting down any obstructions such as street lamps and looking to see that once the crossing is constructed it poses no visibility or pedestrian access problems.

A VC1 (estimate letter with payment return slip) or a VC2 (progress letter) will be sent out following an inspection visit.

If a VC2 was sent out a VC3 (estimate letter with payment return slip) or VC4 (refusal letter) will follow.

If you choose to use your own contractor a Cross 10 letter will be sent out detailing what is required.

Once payment is received and if you have chosen the Council as your preferred contractor to carry out the work a works instruction will be issued to our Operations division and work will commence within 36 days.

Once the work has been completed an inspector will check the site to ensure all work has been completed as required.

Notes to Consider

· Costs for a crossing can vary depending on size and location

· Payment can be made in full or in 10 equal monthly installments

· If payment is made by installments a 10% administration charge will apply

· If you employ your own contractor a fee is payable for supervision
