Road safety - speed checks

Two-thirds of all crashes in which people are killed or injured happen on roads with a speed limit of 30mph or less. At 35mph a driver is twice as likely to kill someone as they are at 30mph.

In order to monitor and check residents' concerns about speeding traffic, surveys of speed and volume will be undertaken usually by automatic counters for a period of 7 days, 24 hours per day. The results will be analysed and appropriate action taken depending upon the results. The police may be requested to undertake enforcement, road signs and markings will be checked for visibility and appropriateness or further traffic management measures may be considered.

The Traffic Management Section for Wirral Council are responsible for the implementation of traffic regulation orders and the delivery of local traffic schemes, such as traffic calming initiatives. For more information please call 0151 606 2004.
