Welcome To Wirral

Boat moorings

There is a general lack of sheltered moorings around the Wirral coastline. Boats moored off the Dee and North Wirral coasts can be damaged or wrecked in storms.

Many boats owned by Wirral people, particularly larger boats, are moved to moorings in North Wales during the summer months and are brought back to Wirral for winter storage on land.

There are deep water moorings in the Mersey suitable for large yachts and keel boats at Rock Ferry and between Egremont and New Brighton. These areas are both relatively well sheltered compared to the north and west coasts of Wirral. The moorings at Rock Ferry are the most sheltered.

Wirral Council operates a permit system whereby anyone wishing to take a vehicle on a foreshore for any purpose, including the launching and retrieval of boats, must obtain a permit. Because of the nature of the Wirral coast it is virtually impossible to launch or retrieve a boat without driving on the foreshore.

Please telephone 0151 647 2366 for a copy of the permit application form.
