Welcome To Wirral

Canals and waterways

Wirral is flanked by the estuaries of two major rivers, the Dee and the Mersey, both important for wildlife and leisure.

Wirral's only canal is the Manchester Ship Canal which is 35.5 miles in length from the main entrance at Eastham to Salford Quays. It handles a variety of shipping traffic carrying oil products, pulp, newsprint, steel and bulk products. Cruises are available through Mersey Ferries.

Reports of pollution on any of Wirral's rivers should be made direct to the Environment Agency by calling 0800 807060.
