Keeping warm

There are several initiatives regarding keeping warm. See links at the bottom of the page for the Department of Health (DOH) campaign and energy efficiency in the home.

In order to keep yourself warm, you should

Wear the right sort of clothes - several thin layers on top of each other hold warm air; a much more efficient way of keeping warm than one thick jumper.

Natural fibres - wool or cotton - keep you warm, and light fleecy clothes are also a good choice.

Your body cools as you sleep - keep warm in bed on really cold nights by wearing woolly socks and a hat and perhaps thermal underwear under your nightdress or pyjamas.

Outdoors - a coat on top of several thin layers works better than one thick jacket or jumper

You lose a lot of heat through your head - wear a hat or scarf!

Fleecy insoles in your shoes or boots will help keep your feet warm. If you stick to flat shoes or boots with textured soles, you won’t slip when it’s icy.

You'll feel the cold more if you get wet, so put on a waterproof top layer if it's raining.

For all your questions on energy saving and energy efficiency grants and offers, telephone the Merseyside Energy Efficiency Advice Centre based in Wallasey on freephone 0800 512 012. They will provide information on a whole host of things such as:

- No cost and low cost ways to save energy.

- Where to go for free insulation if you are on benefits and own/are buying your home on a mortgage or live in a private-rented property.

- If you are not on benefits, details of subsidised insulation and low energy light bulbs from energy companies.

- Interest-free "Cosy Loans" of up to £2000 for insulation, a new central heating boiler or solar water heating.

- Insulation scheme for private landlords.

- If you live in the Housing Market Renewal Area (Central and north Birkenhead, Egremont, Poulton, Rock Ferry, Seacombe and Tranmere) and own/are buying your home on a mortgage or live in a private-rented property there is a scheme for you. It offers free insulation to those on benefits or over 60, and for everyone else in the area the price for loft insulation is £99 and for cavity wall insulation is £99.
