Drug Education
Wirral Drug and Alcohol Action Tam (DAAT) has produced a handbook for professionals giving guidance on drug education for youngsters.
The handbook is intended to be a practical document for use throughout the school. It gives details of the statutory and non-statutory requirements for schools and takes account of the revised National Curriculum published in September 1999 and the new Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship framework.
There is also guidance on the NHSS Wirral Health Promoting Schools Standard and the Wirral Young People’s Substance Misuse Plan.
For headteachers this guidance places Drug Education within a legal and curriculum context and for teachers it can be used as a foundation for the delivery of Drug Education in the classroom. To ensure consistency and clarity the word ‘drug’ throughout the document relates to all mood-altering substances both legal and illegal, including tobacco, solvents, alcohol, prescribed medicines, steroids and amyl nitrates.
