Approved social worker
An Approved Social Worker (ASW) is a qualified Social Worker who has completed additional comprehensive and specialist training in order to be approved by the Local Authority and to fulfill designated functions under the Mental Health Act (1983).
An ASW has a role in mental health assessment under the MHA, in collaboration with other medical professionals. The ASW is required to consider all the circumstances of an individual and to consider the least restrictive options for care and treatment, while retaining responsibility for a decision for compulsory admission to hospital.
