Eligibility criteria for adult social care
The government now requires that all social services in the country use the same Fair Access to Care Services eligibility criteria. Councils have to take into account which level of needs can be met based on what they can afford.
Resources are limited and we cannot always help everyone who approaches us. Sometimes we are not able to provide all the help that people would like. Decisions about who should receive social care services are based on an assessment of the risks to both immediate and long term independence. We always assess people's needs before arranging and agreeing to fund services and we want to make sure that we do this in a fair way. Eligibility criteria help staff in reaching these decisions. Specialist (sometimes called secondary) services have their own criteria and links are given below for Learning Disabilities and Mental Health services for younger adults. People who do not meet these criteria can receive community care services if they meet the Fair Access to Care Services eligibility criteria.
