Help from the Department of Adult Social Services
The Central Advice and Duty Team provides a single contact point for advice and information by telephone, letter and fax. The team will also receive requests for people who have difficulties, which may require services provided by the Department of Adult Social Services.
Who can we help?
Help and advice is available to anyone who:
- has a physical or learning disability
- is experiencing mental health distress
- is experiencing loss of independence or difficulties due to the ageing process
- is experiencing difficulties due to sight or hearing loss
- looks after someone else
- has concerns about an adult (even if you wish to remain anonymous)
Asking for help
When you contact the team we will ask you what help you need. We will then tell you what help is available and how to get it. We will ask you enough questions to decide what advice or help to give you. All information will be treated in confidence.
Wherever possible we will try to answer your query immediately. In some cases you may need to speak to a social worker in the team. You will be informed of any decisions made either at the time or afterwards.
Caring for someone else
If you are a carer and need help or advice to carry on caring we will do our best to make sure that you get the help you need.
Assessment for services
The Department of Adult Social Services has a duty to assess and provide services to a wide range of vulnerable people. If you do not appear to be entitled to an assessment or services we will always try to suggest other ways of resolving your difficulties.
Discharge from hospital
If you are in hospital and need help to be arranged before you go home you should ask the nursing staff how to contact a social worker.
Is there a charge?
There is no charge for the advice and information provided by the Central Advice and Duty Team.
Quality standards
The team aims to operate to a high standard at all times. If you wish to comment on any aspect of the service you can ask to speak to the manager or contact the Quality Assurance Unit.
