Welcome To Wirral

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy is the service which assesses disabled people's needs for equipment or adaptations to their homes to help them manage everyday activities in their own homes. This could involve major building work or just the provision of equipment.

It operates from the Department of Adult Social Services, and requests for assessment should be directed to the Central Advice and Duty Team.

People who need equipment will have the equipment provided to them from the Community Equipment Store. This equipment service is provided jointly with the NHS in Wirral. There is no charge for equipment, however, it is provided on loan and must be returned if it is no longer needed, if the disabled person moves out of Wirral or moves into a care home.

People who need minor adaptations to their home, i.e. costing less than £1,200 will have these provided by the Department of Adult Social Services. However, this will be referred to the Home Adaptations Team (Home Adaptations Team) in Housing Services who will arrange for appropriate contractors to carry out the work. Client Liaison Officers from Home Adaptations Team will deal with any queries about the arrangements for the work.

People who need major adaptations to their homes, i.e. costing more than £1,200 will be referred to Housing Services for a Disabled Facilities Grant. This will be done automatically by Occupational Therapy Services once the needs for adaptations have been determined. The Disabled Facilities Grant is limited to a maximum cost of £25,000, including some administrative costs. Housing Services will arrange for a financial assessment to determine how much the disabled person will have to contribute to the cost of the adaptations.
