Disability

There are different definitions of what disability means and there is also some debate about the attitude of society towards disability. The ‘Medical Model’ of disability is the more traditional view and focuses on the best way of ‘curing’ or ‘fixing’ the disability so that the individual can fit into mainstream society.

The ‘Social Model’ of disability is a more contemporary way of looking at the situation. This model sees the individual as having an impairment, but feels that he or she is disabled by societies attitudes to their impairment, rather than by the impairment itself.

The legal definition of disability describes any physical or mental impairment that has an adverse and substantial long-term effect on an individual’s ability to carry out normal day to day activities.

Regardless of these debates about the definition of disability, there is a good deal of practical advice and information available that might offer some assistance. The following links will take you to other websites which provide more specific information about different aspects of disability.
