Short Breaks

Short breaks in residential or nursing homes allow you and your carer to take a break while, hopefully, helping you to live independently in your own home for longer.

Having a break(respite care)

You can take regular breaks, or just one break. This will depend on the result of an assessment by a care manager who will help you to identify your specific needs. Residential short breaks are normally provided within local authority establishments unless the assessment of your needs indicates otherwise. If you have nursing needs a health assessment will determine whether those needs mean that placement in a nursing home is appropriate.

If you are entitled to short breaks in residential or nursing care you can expect the following:

  • We will explain any charges, before your break
  • We will encourage you to involve your carer
  • Before your stay, you will be able to visit the home to see if it is suitable

If we assess your needs as urgent, we will arrange emergency breaks within 48 hours.
