Wirral Archives Service cares for and offers public access to thousands of historical records relating to the history of the Wirral. Researchers are welcome to consult original documents and other sources free of charge.
We can provide records for those interested in family history, local history, and maritime and industrial history.
Our new premises feature a spacious, attractive search room, with microfilm and microfiche readers as well as new computers to help people with their research.
The Archives Service holds almost 5 miles of compelling documents, covering local government, workhouses, schools, hospitals, law courts and businesses, including the world-famous Cammell Laird shipbuilders. Photographs, maps, plans and local newspapers dating back to the nineteenth century are preserved in a large, purpose-built strong room. Wirral Archives also holds records on microfilm or microfiche for family historians including the census, electoral registers and burial registers.
Wirral Archives Service is running free Saturday morning workshops aimed at everyone from schoolchildren to family and local history groups. The sessions will be brought alive with original documents and cover topics including family history, the history of Wirral, schools and education, and Wirral at war.
