Wirral Sports Council

Objectives

Wirral Sports Council is an advisory committee made up of Local Councillors, Officer from the Department of Education and Cultural Services and representatives from local sports clubs/organisations.

The Sports Councils objectives are to:

  • Coordinate the activities of the local sports clubs in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral.
  • Assess the sporting needs of M.B.W area and to help and advise when catering for those needs.
  • Co-operate within M.B.W and other local bodies in the furtherance of the aims and objectives of the council and to advise the M.B.W on the collective opinions of local sporting interest.
  • Advise on financial matters as they affect the council.
  • Support local sports clubs and co-ordinate action within the M.B.W area.

Meetings
The SC holds 6 executive meetings, 5 members meetings and 1 AGM per year.

Executive meetings take place to discuss the latest sporting initiatives and any matters arising. Member meetings are held to disseminate information as discussed at executive meetings and to discuss members arising.

Many of our listed clubs have taken advantage of the services available for funding advice and assistance.

Wirral Sports Council Awards Discretionary Grants to clubs and individuals annually. Application forms can be obtained from the Secretary,Wirral Sports Council on (0151) 653 3251, Caretaker's House, Grange Road West Sports Centre, Grange Road West, Birkenhead, CH43 4XE.

The advert for the awards can be seen in the local free papers in August of each year, where the closing date will be specified.

Purpose of Grant
Grants will be awarded according to the personal needs towards: Coaching fees, equipment costs, costs of lodging when training away from home.

Guidance Notes
As funds are limited, not every application can be supported, however, advice where appropriate on other sources of funding, will be offered to unsuccessful applicants.

 Applicants must be a resident of Wirral and a member of a club who is a member of the Wirral Sports Council.

 Individuals who are progressing towards county standard or are competing at county standard in the year August 2005 - July 2006.

 Grants of up to £200 will be distributed in cash or in vouchers.

 Individuals wishing to find funds for hire of facilities within Wirral can apply for Free Training passes for Wirral's sport and leisure facilities - applications can be obtained from Geoff Scott on (0151) 666 5546.

 Applicants competing with distinction in relevant National competitions in relevant recognised age groups will not be supported from this discretionary sports grant. For other sources of funding please contact Sports Development on (0151) 653 3251.

 Merseyside Sport - Sports Bursary is aimed at sports people who are aspiring to Regional or County standard competition. Applications will therefore not be accepted from above or below this standard.

 The panel (Merseyside Sports Council) will sit twice a year, applications need to be in by the 15th December and 1st July each year.

Sports Awards
The Wirral Sports Council Sports Awards are designed to recognise the achievements of the Borough's Sporting Community and to help raise the profile of sport in the Borough.

 The Awards fall into a number of categories:

  •  Coach of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Club of the Year
  • Young Sports Person of the Year
  • Lifetime Achiever Award

The winner received a Commemorative Cup/Plaque of the occasion.
