Home Care

Why look after your home?

Your home is probably the most valuable asset you will ever buy and it needs to be looked after. If neglected your home will deteriorate and lose value. A lack of regular maintenance will mean bigger repair bills either now or in the future.

Your home could even become dangerous and unhealthy. You need to be concerned looking after it.

Who is responsible to repair your home?

Most repairs and improvements to privately owned houses & flats are carried out by homeowners themselves. It is the Government’s policy that the responsibility for maintaining privately owned property should rest first and foremost with the homeowner.

Getting financial advice

Options to consider to improve or repair your home may be:-

  • A loan from the Bank or Building Society borrowed against any equity tied up in your property.
  • Age concern.
  • Citizens Advice Bureau.
  • Housing Advice Centre.

What assistance does Wirral Council offer?

Over the recent years, the government has reduced the money available to local authorities for grants. They have also changed the law so that Local Authorities are no longer required to give people a grant to repair their homes if they are unfit.

Some discretionary grants are still available in special circumstances. It is anticipated that less and less will be available in the future.
