Home improvements – home repair assistant grant
Providing funding is available, it may be possible to award grants for privately owned homes.
This assistance can be provided for urgent essential repairs, for improvements or for adaptations to a dwelling in connection with the disability of an occupant. This assistance is available to applicants in receipt of benefits and who have owned the property for three years or more. Each case is considered on its own merits. Applicants over 60 years should contact the Wirral Home Improvement Agency and those between 18 and 59 years should contact the Home Improvement Team.
Wirral proposes to continue the allocation of Home Repair Assistance where there is an immediate risk to the health and safety of your family caused by repairs required in your home, for one or more of the following reasons :-
- risk of electric shock or fire as a result of a defective installation.
- risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, however
i) work will be limited to the removal of the
defective appliance if power sockets are available to provide a heat source,
or
ii) if a suitable gas point is available for the connection of a gas fire,
except
iii) where the gas appliance is the only means of providing constant hot
water.
- the repair or replacement of a domestic hot water heating appliance in accommodation occupied by elderly people or young children.
- risk of imminent structural collapse of part of the building.
- properties with collapsed drains causing sewage discharge, when remedial works are not covered by property insurance.
- rainwater penetration into an occupied bedroom, bathroom or kitchen, or around a light fitting.
If you wish to apply you will need to complete a questionnaire supported by additional information that will be required to support your request for grant assistance.
