Welcome To Wirral

Economic Regeneration Initiatives

Our economic regeneration activities provide core services in terms of support for the development of businesses, for improving the employment prospects of Wirral residents and in attracting European Funding.

We have a number of project teams and initiatives each concentrating on a geographic area of Wirral or on a specific issue.

European Team

The European Team deals with all aspects relating to European funding issues and in particular the second round of Objective 1 funding where £840m is available in grant aid throughout Merseyside between 2000 - 2006.

Hamilton Quarter

The Hamilton Quarter scheme has now finished, after a seven year programme focused on the regeneration of the historic heart of Birkenhead. Its brief was to oversee the rebirth of Hamilton Square and the area around it, to create a unique and vibrant place where people would want to live work and spend their leisure time.

The scheme was co-ordinated by the Hamilton Quarter Partnership Board, made up of equal representation from the public, private and community/voluntary sectors. The Partnership secured £15 million from the Government’s Single Regeneration Budget Challenge Fund which has been used as the catalyst to draw down a further £64 million of additional investment over its seven year lifespan.

Although the main project activity concluded on 31 March 2002, since then, further building refurbishment work has continued in the Argyle Street/Market Street area, a new campus for the Wirral Metropolitan College has been constructed in Shore Road, and a new office development – Haymarket House - has been built on the site of the former Drome club off Conway Street.

Lairdside

Lairdside was an imaginative and innovative initiative centred on and around the Cammell Laird shipyard site providing new business investment opportunities that will build upon the inherent maritime strengths of the area.

The Lairdside initiative finished in March 2003.

New Opportunities

New Opportunities on Wirral is a 7-year £20m programme to help reduce unemployment, enable residents to access new employment opportunities, develop sustainable community focused economic activities and working with other Partnerships to maximise existing regeneration activities.

New Wallasey

The New Wallasey scheme has now finished, after a six-year programme of strategic regeneration, aimed at continuing the re-vitalisation of much of the old Wallasey County Borough.

The area covered by the initiative includes New Brighton, Seacombe, Wallasey, Poulton, Liscard, Egremont and Leasowe. Within these areas are key locations such as the Dock Estate, the Twelve Quays site, the resort of New Brighton, the major retail centre of Liscard, as well as large residential areas.

The aims of the initiative include support for local communities to enable them to get involved in the regeneration of their area, the improvement of the environment, the further development of tourism, the creation of employment opportunities, and measures to assist local people into employment in the Wallasey area.

Wirral Pathways

The Pathways Project is a consortium of partners, from the public, voluntary and community sectors, who are working together to regenerate a number of the most disadvantaged communities in Wirral through 13 area partnerships. It is a Wirral Partnership project to which the Council is the lead partner.

For Wirral the project is undertaken on the Leasowe Estate through the Leasowe Regeneration Board. The Council supports the Regeneration Partnership by providing advice and accountable body arrangements.

Wirral Waterfront

The latest successful scheme, Wirral Waterfront, is a £144m comprehensive initiative which seeks to bring together and build upon Wirral’s regeneration effort to date.

The initiative area which will continue until 2007 runs the length of Wirral’s Mersey Waterfront from New Brighton to Eastham and is also simultaneously Wirral’s SSD (Strategic Special Development) Area - our site of greatest economic opportunity in respect of European Objective One funding.
