Masterplanning - North Birkenhead & Bidston
The Council agreed the Framework for Regeneration for North Birkenhead and Bidston in the summer of 2005. It set out a vision for the revitalisation of Birkenhead's housing market over the next 10-15 years. The Framework is only a concept plan in the sense that it does not declare large-scale clearance schemes but sets out a consultant’s view that significant clearance and rebuilding of new homes might be required to secure Birkenhead's sustainable future. Any decisions about clearance in the future will be taken by the Council after further, more detailed discussion with the residents who might be affected. As yet no discussions have taken place.
Current activity in Birkenhead includes various clearance schemes such as the “Ten Streets Area” and Station Road & Tyrer Street. There is also a group repair scheme underway in Norman street triangle area and a new build development opposite St James Church in North Birkenhead.
Two Neighbourhood Renewal Assessments (NRA’s) due to commence in September 2006.
The two areas are:
Milner & Carrington Street Area (inc Thorneycroft, Plumer and Rundle Street)
This NRA is primarily focused on the future of Milner & Carrington Street, and looking at implementing other services and initiatives in the other streets including wardens, empty property strategy and private landlord licensing. An initial community consultation event was held in May and the NRA is due to start in the late Summer.
Bray, Brill, Patten and Laird Street Area
This area is the triangular shaped area between Laird Street, Brassey Street and Cavendish Street.
As with the Milner & Carrington Street area the NRA will be used to determine the future options for the area. A community consultation event was also held for this area in May 2006 and the NRA will run at the same time as the other.
