Parks and Countryside - Outdoor Facilities

Wirral has over 1,500 hectares of public open space. Listed below are the main parks and countryside areas. Each park has a ranger who can be contacted for further information. For lists of events and activities in parks, call Wirral Country Park Visitor Centre on 0151 648 4371.

Arrowe Country Park: 400 acres of parkland including an 18 hole golf course, pitch and putt, football pitches, tennis and bowls. Education Centre. Telephone: 0151 678 4200.

Ashton Park, West Kirby: Local park facilities including bowling greens, tennis courts, children's playground and ornamental lake. Tea servary at weekends in the Summer. Telephone: 0151 648 4371.

Bidston Hill: 100 acres of woodland and heathland. The windmill at the highest point is open regularly. Tam O'Shanter Urban Farm is open daily, all year round. Telephone: 0151 653 9332.

Birkenhead Park: The world's first public park, designed by Sir Joseph Paxton. Includes two lakes and many listed buildings. Excellent children's playground in the lower park. Telephone: 0151 670 0695 or 0151 652 5197.

Dibbinsdale Local Nature Reserve (LNR): A hidden valley of ancient woodland. Good area for bird watching. Telephone: 0151 334 9851.

Eastham Country Park: Well established country park with superb views over the Mersey. Visitor Centre, toilets and tea garden. Telephone: 0151 327 1007.

Heswall Dales: Heathland and Woodland with views out over the Dee Estuary marshes. Part of the area is managed by Cheshire Wildlife Trust. Telephone: 0151 342 7088.

Hilbre Islands LNR: Three tidal islands in the mouth of the Dee Estuary. Groups larger than five members need a permit to visit the islands. Access from Dee Lane, West Kirby at low tide only. NB: It is essential to check tide times before attempting to cross to the islands. Telephone: 0151 648 4371.

Royden Park and Thurstaston Common LNR: 200 acres of heathland and woodland partially owned by the National Trust. Telephone: 0151 677 7594.

Stapledon Woods and Caldy Hill: Woodland and heathland with magnificant views over the Dee Estuary to Hilbre. Telephone: 0151 648 4371.

Vale Park: Well maintained urban parks on the banks of the River Mersey in New Brighton. Band stand has concerts and activities in the Summer. Telephone: 0151 639 1386.

Victoria and Mersey Parks: Two urban parks in Tranmere with play areas, community garden and football. Telephone: 0151 652 5197.

Wirral Country Park: 12 mile long former railway line with separate horse ride for most of its length. Cafe, visitor centre and toilets at Thurstaston. Telephone: 0151 648 4371.

North Wirral Coastal Park: Linear Park stretching four miles along the North Wirral coast. Small visitor centre in the 18th century lighthouse at Leasowe. Telephone: 0151 678 5488.

Central Park Wallasey: Large urban park with lake, play area and attractive walled garden. Telephone: 0151 691 1450.
