Welcome To Wirral

Parks, Countryside, Green Spaces

Wirral is an incredibly diverse area, including countryside and coastline, and the wildlife-rich Mersey and Dee Estuaries. We realise that there are many people who like to use that land for leisure and enjoyment, so we have to make sure it's protected now and for future generations.

  • The Council is responsible for providing 1,240 hectares of parks and open spaces, 56 per cent of which includes natural countryside, coastline, five local nature reserves and nine sites of special scientific interest.
  • Conservation and wildlife preservation have always been high on our agenda; we were the first local authority to create a Country Park, and the first to have its own wildlife rehabilitation officer.
  • Initiatives such as our Dogwatch campaign, which urges people to clear up after their dogs, ensure our green and pleasant land stays that way for everyone.
  • Our Ranger service, which looks after the country and urban parks and helps educate the public, helps us continue our groundbreaking work. We have an extensive programme of environmental education and awareness raising schemes, which we take into local schools. Good environmental practice begins at an early age!
  • We work with countryside and conservation organisations, including those with an active interest and role in the countryside and coastline, and are involved in drawing up management plans for the Mersey and Dee Estuaries.

Key actions for the future:

A group of local and national nature conservation organisations has been established to help prepare a Biodiversity Action Plan for Wirral to protect individual species and existing habitats, and develop new areas for nature conservation.

We are working with organisations such as Groundwork Wirral to enhance our urban environment, and help people living in some of Wirral's most disadvantaged communities to create their own community parks. A list of current projects can be obtained from Groundwork Wirral on 666 2424.
