Saving Energy

Key actions for the future:

Strike a light! Scottish Power is working with the Council on a variety of energy saving schemes. Combined heat and power (CHP) in a building creates considerable cost savings. The Council already has a CHP unit at Leasowe Leisure Centre, and is carrying out studies to determine new sites where CHP can be used.

As part of the commitment to Local Agenda 21 and its drive to achieve the Government's target for a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, there is a need for awareness and training. Scottish Power will carry out a series of seminars this autumn as part of this initiative.

Targets will be set for the reduction of gas and electricity use in all Council buildings.

A replacement lighting scheme has been successfully introduced into 24 Council buildings across Wirral resulting in 1,100 tonnes of CO2 and 2,122,000 kwhs of electricity being saved per year.

Householders can buy energy efficiency measures - such as cavity wall and loft insulation - at a discount thanks to a special deal negotiated by the Council.

Apart from promoting energy efficiency measures to its tenants, the Council plans to spread the energy efficiency message to private landlords and householders.

  • We aim to reduce the amount of gas and electricity we use in our council buildings by conserving it, using it more efficiently, and investigating alternative energy sources, such as solar and wind power.
  • Our work with ScottishPower and other agencies on a variety of energy saving schemes includes replacing inefficient light fittings in municipal buildings with low energy light fittings to cut energy bills. Apart from saving the earth's resources, that saves you, the Council Taxpayer money as well!
  • Together with Wirral Energy Advice Centre we're actively promoting energy efficiency measures in the home, especially in our own Council housing and residential accommodation, by distributing 7,000 energy efficient light bulbs in the space of two years.
  • No-one should have to live in draughty, damp houses that are hard to heat; we've looked into how warm and energy efficient our Council houses and flats are, and are working with organisations such as housing associations and private landlords to make sure that people have access to affordable warmth.
  • Carbon dioxide gases released as fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas are burned contribute to deadly 'greenhouse gases', which are heating up the atmosphere. We aim to cut the amount of these gases we release into the atmosphere by cutting down on the fuel we use.
