Conserving water
What we're doing :-
- We aim to encourage efficient water use, and make sure that supplies are obtained with the minimum of environmental damage. We keep an eye on drinking water quality, and contribute towards improvements in river water standards to enhance the environment and increase the numbers of species that live there.
- As befits an area almost surrounded by the sea, we take great pride in our bathing waters, and our beaches are some of the cleanest in the northwest. They are regularly tested - by ourselves in association with the Environment Agency - regularly winning accolades for water quality. We also received a prestigious Seaside Award from the Tidy Britain Group. However there are still improvements to make to the quality of our coastal water rivers.
- We monitor water use - if we see unusually high levels of water consumption, we find out why, and do something about it. Over the last five years, we've reduced by more than a quarter the amount of water we use at a time when water costs rose by 80 per cent.
- We regularly sample drinking water to make sure it's up to European standards.
- We're promoting water-saving conservation in our buildings, including schools and sports centres.
Key actions for the future:
Wallasey Town Hall has piloted a trial scheme of waterless urinals which has reduced consumption by 44% and helped us save many thousands of gallons of water, and thousand of pounds. We're now hoping to extend this scheme across the whole authority.
