Welcome To Wirral

Sexual Health & Teenage Pregnancy

Currently teenage pregnancy rates nationally are at their lowest level for 20 years but the UK still has one of the highest rates in Europe. The National Teenage Pregnancy Strategy has two national targets which have been adopted locally, they are:

  1. Halve the under 18 conception rate in England by 2010 (with an interim reduction target of 15% by 2004.
  2. Increase the participation of teenage mothers in education, training or work to 60% by 2010 to reduce the risk of long term social exclusion.

The Wirral Teenage Pregnancy Strategy Action Plan outlines partners’ roles and responsibilities in delivering local actions. There is rigorous performance management and the Action Plan itself is reviewed and updated on a yearly basis.

Teenage pregnancy is associated with poorer life outcomes both in terms of health and opportunities for teenage mothers and their children. Whilst young people living in poorer, more deprived areas are more likely to become involved in a teenage pregnancy, evidence shows stronger links between poor education attainment, low aspiration and teenage pregnancy. To reduce the number of teenage pregnancies and the chances of teenage parents and their children being socially excluded, Wirral has two sub groups in addition to the Teenage Pregnancy Steering Group looking at:

  1. Better Prevention and Contraception – Improving the quality and opportunities for SRE (Sex and Relationship Education) within schools and other settings as well as improving the range of sexual health and contraceptive information services for young people.
  2. Better Support for Pregnant Teenagers and Teenage Parents – Improving the support available to pregnant teenagers and teenage parents (including fathers) in terms of housing, health, advice, education, training, childcare and employment opportunities.

Information relating to Teenage Pregnancy within this section has been split under these two areas of work.
