Sex and Relationship Education (SRE)
Within Primary and Secondary Schools
All schools are required to teach SRE and should have an updated policy. Schools are encouraged to involve pupils and parents in developing their SRE policy and parents can looks at the school’s policy at any time. Further information can be found under the SRE section of this directory or by contacting the Advisory Teacher on 0151 346 6609.
In supporting primary and secondary schools to deliver effective SRE, both teachers and community nurses have the opportunity to obtain certification through the Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) Continuing Personal Development (CPD) Programme. Continued support is offered to all PSHE Coordinators through termly meetings where updates are provided and good practice highlighted.

Information for parents of pre teens and teenagers
Although many young people want to, they continue to report that they find it difficult to talk to their parents/carers about sexual health and relationships. Parents are often unsure how to approach the subject and at what age they should start discussing relationships with their children. Studies have shown that those young people who talk to their parents about sex and relationships are more likely to delay first sex and use contraception. This goes against the worry that some parents have, that talking to children about safe sex will encourage them to start having sex at an earlier age. There is no evidence to suggest this.
