Food Policy in Schools - A Strategic Policy Framework for School Governing Bodies, Catering and Food Procurement Supplement
The NGA in partnership with the Department for Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has published a supplement to the NGA/FSA Food Policy in Schools - a strategic policy framework for school governing bodies. The main food policy document guided governing bodies through the process of developing a whole school food policy and the issues to consider on each aspect of school food. The supplement advises governors on how to produce whole school policy statements to promote healthy food and improve sustainability and efficiency in their procurement of food and provision of catering services. The document has separate sections covering: Defra's Public Sector Food Procurement Initiative, Sustainable Schools, the Year of Food and Farming and Growing Schools. The final section provides information and links to further guidance and resources.
The document is available to download from the publications (guidance) section of the NGA website - http://www.nga.org.uk/gdncedocs.aspx
The main Food Policy Document can also be downloaded from the NGA website or ordered in hard copy from the NGA office.
If you are struggling to keep up with all the educational terms and abbreviations please read the document A Governors' Guide to Educational Terms and Abbreviations or visit: http://www.governornet.co.uk - Access Governornet and click on Jargon Buster, top row, right hand side.

Draft Children & Young People's Plan 2008 to 2011
The Children and Young People’s Strategic Partnership through the Director of Children’s Services and the Every Child Matters Outcome strategy groups is in the process of producing a new Children and Young People’s Plan.
The Plan which is currently in early draft form can be viewed on this link . It builds on the first plan that was produced in 2006 and on the review of progress that was published earlier in 2007 both of which can also be found on the website. It outlines how we have changed provision to meet the needs of children and young people and proposals for the way in which services are delivered in future.
Work is continuing on developing the Plan particularly taking account of comments from individuals and organisations that wish to contribute. More detail will be added to the main priorities over the next few months.
I would however welcome any comments that you have on the Plan as it currently stands.

The NCPTA Gold Star Rewards and LEAPP Awards
The NCPTA Gold Star Rewards and LEAPP Awards 2008 (Learning, Education and Parental Partnership) are underway and open to all PTAs and schools across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Now in their third year, the schemes provide cash prizes totaling £12,000 in recognition of PTA achievements and to encourage and establish specific projects to get more parents engaged in their child's learning.
Six Gold Star Rewards of £1,000 will be given in recognition of PTA success and good practice. The Gold Star Rewards are an ideal way for a school to celebrate the success of its PTA, to sustain the enthusiasm of parents and get others involved.
An additional six LEAPP Awards of £1,000 will be provided as start up funding for new activities or projects that aim to get more parents involved with their child's school and engaged in their learning. These projects can be led by schools or parent groups or by parents and schools working in partnership.
The closing date for applications is 8 February 2008. For further information and how to apply visit the NCPTA website.
