Inclusion

Inclusion is a process, that is to say a never-ending search to find better ways of responding to diversity. It is about learning to live with difference and learning how to live with differences. It is about ensuring that every individual can reach their potential, can perform to the best of their ability, and can feel valued and respected as a member of their community.

Wirral has adopted the Greater Merseyside Position Statement on inclusion which defines Inclusion in terms of Presence, Participation and Achievement.

Presence
Where learners are educated and whether they attend regularly and arrive punctually. Wherever possible learners should be able to receive their education in mainstream settings.

Participation
The quality of learner’s experience, the extent to which they feel involved and valued and the quality of service received by their parents/carers.

Achievement
Learning outcomes across the whole curriculum inside and outside the classroom.

The development of inclusive policies and practices is a complex and long-term social process. It is a process that needs to actively engage all who are involved in the education of children and young people.
