Local Democracy

In line with the government’s aim of modernising democracy so that decision-makers are more accountable to the electorate, the Council has adopted executive arrangements under which the majority of decisions are taken by a Cabinet but these are then subject to scrutiny by one of six select committees. The new arrangements came into effect in May 2002 and from that time most of the old committees were abolished.

Some functions fall outside the executive/scrutiny arrangements – these include planning applications and licensing matters – and separate committees have been established or retained to deal with them.

Shown at the links below are the ten Cabinet portfolios and the terms of reference of all for the committees together with details of their membership. For further information please contact the Committee Services Section at the Town Hall, Wallasey, on 0151 691 8474/8471 (e-mail mikearchbold@wirral.gov.uk)
