Welcome To Wirral
Current Mayor
Every year, the Mayor of Wirral’s Charity Fund raises money for a variety of good causes.

Adrian Jones was born in South Wales in 1944 and is married to Christine, a Ward Manager in a Wirral hospital. They have three teenage children, Eleri, Huw and Rhys and have lived in Wallasey for some nineteen years.
A former member of Newport County Borough Council Adrian now represents Wirral’s Seacombe Ward, serving also on the Merseyside Police Authority.
As a young man Adrian took part in several sports including rugby, tennis, caving, and competitive cycling. His 50 year old Claud Butler is still in full working order and he can oftern be spotted pedalling along the Promenade, between hostelries. He also fished the Usk and the Wye.
Leaving school at fifteen, Adrian worked in the real world before entering university as a mature student, in his twenties, to read Politics. Until 1985 he was a Senior Lecturer at the Gwent College of Higher Education, teaching Political Economy and History.
With a strong interest in adult and continuing education Adrian chaired the South Wales District of the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) for some years. He left his lecturing post in Wales to become the WEA’s North of Scotland District Secretary with an area comprising of Tayside, Grampian, Highland, Orkney, Shetland, and the Outer Hebrides. Christine became a ward sister in a Scottish hospital and they lived in a small Aberdeenshire village where, almost accidentally, they acquired the village hotel and restaurant – taking it over on Burns night.
With the birth of their first child, Eleri, Adrian and Christine fled the unsocial hours of the hotel trade and Adrian obtained a post at Aberdeen University. When, by chance, he spotted a ‘Guardian’ advert for a Northern Ireland Regional Official with his old lecturing union, NATFHE, (now UCU), he applied and was appointed to the post. They then settled in Wallasey for Adrian to serve Northern Ireland from the Association’s Liverpool office. He now represents university lecturers in the North West and Yorkshire
Between times Adrian trained as a photographer and still takes the odd snap. He has, in the true spirit of impartiality, recorded the weddings of a Conservative and a Labour Member of our Council – but not to each other! To complete the hat trick he awaits a Liberal romance.
Adrian and Chris enjoy taking their Welsh Collie and English Springer for a walk or swim. They attend rugby internationals in Cardiff whenever they can get tickets. Adrian still sometimes plays his violin - until a woodworm comes out with a white flag.
They have chosen Claire House and St. John ‘s Hospice as their charities. Donations payable to “The Mayor’s Special Charity Appeal” can be sent to the Civic Services Office, Town Hall, Brighton Street, Wallasey CH44 8ED. Tel: 691 8527.
The Mayor’s theme this year is to support reading.
