Welcome To Wirral
Information management
INTRODUCTION
Wirral Council is committed to improving our delivery of services to the people it serves. It is essential therefore that the information the Council holds is accurate, properly managed and kept secure until it is of no longer use; when it will be confidentially destroyed or archived for historical reference. Wirral Council is embarking on a new and exciting Archive Service and corporate Records Management Store to underline our commitment to service delivery. As this major project develops we will add information to our web pages to keep you, the public, informed of what we are doing.
A Commitment to Transparency, Openness and Access to Information
Wirral Council wants to keep people informed about what we are doing and what services we can provide. A fundamental part of keeping people informed is openness and transparency in our business dealings. We aim to provide access to as much information we hold as possible. This will make it easier for you to understand more about the Council and its Services and to access those Services. The Council often makes decisions which directly affect you and we encourage you to participate in these processes and the decision making.
There are currently 4 key areas of legislation which give people specific rights of access to information.
Data Protection
This legislation applies to all organisations and gives everyone the right of access to information held about them. (Personal Data). It puts a legal requirement on organisations to ensure that all Personal Data held, in whatever format is properly managed and not disclosed to third parties inappropriately.
Freedom of Information
This legislation applies to public bodies only, which include local and central government, NHS and Police Forces. The legislation gives the right of access for any person or organisation to the majority of non-personal information which any public authority holds.
Environmental Information Regulations
These Regulations, known as EIR came into force in 2004. They provide a right of access to any information about the natural environment, such as pollution, land, buildings, roads etc.
Re-use Public Sector Information
These Regulations are intended to help the Public Sector make more effective use of the information that we produce. The Regulations came into force on 1st July 2005.
