Applying for Student Support

Full time Undergraduate Study

Students living on the Wirral should apply to their Local Authority (LA). It is important that students apply to their LA for assistance as soon as they have an offer of a place on a course, even if the offer is conditional, the postal address is

Student Finance Direct

Student Finance Direct is an on-line service for students applying for a range of Student Financial Support products. The service is managed by the Student Loans Company (SLC) in partnership with Local Authorities (LAs) and the Department for Innovation Universities and Skills. It provides assistance to students and their parents or guardians, throughout the annual cycle via the Internet, telephone or through their Local Authority. What Financial Help is Available?

The package of Student Support that you can apply for will depend on whether you are a full time undergraduate renewal student or a full time undergraduate new student, a part time undergraduate student or a postgraduate student.

Renewal Students type 1

A renewal student type 1 is a student who starts their course from September 2006 or September 2007.

Renewal Student type 2

A renewal Student type 2 is a student in one of the following categories;

  • Has taken a gap year in 2005/06 and had by 1st August 2005 received confirmation of the deferred place
  • Was not able to take up the place in 2005/06 because of ‘A’ level results that have been successfully appealed against
  • Started your current course before September 2006 or have transferred from a course which started before then
  • Started an end on degree course following a Foundation Degree, HND, HNC or Dip HE, which began in 2004/05 or 2005/06.

New Student

A New Student is a student who starts their course from September 2008.

Part Time Students

Students enrolled on part time courses.

Postgraduate Students

Students enrolled on post-graduate courses.
