Welcome To Wirral
Commercial Waste and Recycling
Businesses across Wirral are required to store and dispose of the waste generated by their business activities responsibly. Reducing the amount of waste business produces and recycling as much as possible are all good ways to help the environment.
Wirral’s household domestic rubbish and recycling wheelie bins are for household waste only. Businesses must not use these bins to dispose of their waste. Businesses must have a Trade Waste Agreement with a commerical waste carrier.
Without official trade waste disposal arrangements, businesses may have difficulty disposing of their waste and then resort to dumping the waste illegally. This is a serious offence, and Wirral Council works around the clock to catch and prosecute fly-tippers.
In order to protect our environment and to discourage and reduce the illegal tipping of rubbish, Wirral Council have been granted powers by the government to issue penalty notices to Wirral based businesses who do not have correct trade waste disposal procedures in place.
Businesses now have a legal duty to provide the Council with documentary evidence that they dispose of their waste legally. A ‘Trade Waste Agreement’ must be made available by businesses upon the request of Council Officers.
Businesses who fail to produce evidence of an agreement will be issued with a £300 fixed penalty notice. Non-payment of the penalty can result in legal action.
How do I enter in to a Trade Waste Agreement?
Wirral Council can not advise you on which commercial waste carrier to use.
We recommend that you look in a telephone directory such as the Yellow Pages for details of commercial waste companies in Wirral. Some commercial waste, such as paper and card, can be collected for recycling. Again, look in the Yellow Pages for local recycling companies. Alternatively, call the Environment Agency who can offer advice on 0870 850 6506 or visit www.environment-agency.gov.uk
I have seen businesses dumping their rubbish - what can I do?
Anyone who wishes to report incidents of fly-tipping can contact Streetscene anonymously, email streetscene@wirral.gov.uk or call 0151 606 2004.
Try to note down the registration of the vehicle if possible, and the location and time.
