Help with Council Tax - Second Adult Rebate
Second Adult Rebate is based on the income of the people living with you and not your income. If you think your income is too high you may still qualify for up to 25% off your bill.
If you are:
- A single person responsible for paying Council Tax
OR - You have a partner who is in a discounted category (see section 3)
AND - You have other adults living with you who receive a low income
YOU MAY BE ENTITLED TO SECOND ADULT REBATE
What is a Second Adult?
Anyone who lives in your household who is 18 or over and does not pay rent to live with you. This does not include:
- Anyone who pays Council Tax
- Your partner
- A joint tenant or owner of your property
- People in discounted categories
The discounted categories:
- Students
- Student Nurses
- Severely mentally impaired
- Children
- School leavers
- YT trainees
- Hospital Detainees
- Patients
- Apprentices
- Patients in Nursing Homes
- Members of Religious Communities
- Care Workers
- Prisoners
What is a second adult rebate?
It is a rebate based upon the income of the people who live with you and not your income. You may be entitled to rebate of up to 25% off your bill providing that the circumstances in section 1 apply to you.
How to Claim?
If you think you may be entitled to Second Adult Rebate you must complete a Housing/Council Tax Benefit application form.
If you qualify for both benefits you will receive whichever is the higher of the two; you cannot be awarded both benefits.
